How to Make a Modeling Portfolio

A step by step guide to making your modeling portfolio.

Making a Modeling Portfolio: Step 1

Know Your Modeling Type

There are models of all body sizes and types, so you just have to be realistic. Take your measurements – height, bust, waist, and hips – and know your body type before deciding what type of modeling to pursue. The good news is that you don’t have to be tall and thin to be a model. There is a big market for other types of modeling – petite modeling, glamour modeling, plus-size modeling, even body parts modeling.

Making a Modeling Portfolio: Step 2

Choose the Right Photographer

This is very important. You need to find a photographer that will fit your style. The good news is photographers have online portfolios too so you can look at their work before deciding. Does their photography match the type of modeling you want to pursue? If you want to be a swimsuit model, then you need a photographer who has an extensive swimsuit photography portfolio.

Hire a Professional Hairstylist and Make-up Artist

Having your hair and make-up done professionally will definitely help to make your photos look better. Hairstylists and make-up artists will know how to highlight your features.  Ask for a reference, your photographer should know someone he or she can recommend. Again, hairstylists and make-up artists have portfolios of their work too so they help you decide who to hire.

Making a Modeling Portfolio: Step 3

Choose the Right Photos

The good news is that you can now get a lot more photos and choices with digital photography. Choose 10-15 photos for your modeling portfolio and be diverse. You want your portfolio to show versatility so you should have different clothing, poses, and facial expressions.

Get the Modeling Portfolio Printed

Have your modeling portfolio printed with high quality prints. Include your personal statistics – height, weight, eye color, and hair color. This is what you will be showing to modeling scouts and agents when you meet them. You should also have an online modeling portfolio so you can better market yourself.
